Behaviour therapy

If your dog is not behaving the way he's supposed to, you can use the expertise of a behaviour therapist. Behaviour therapy is a complex matter and for this you've come to the right address here at Walk the Dog. You do not go to a regular dog obedience school to solve behavioural problems.

Examples of unacceptable behaviour:

  • fear of noises, strange objects, people, dogs, other animals...
  • aggression towards family members, strange people, dogs part of the family, strange dogs...
  • aggression towards bikers, joggers...
  • demanding way too much attention of the owners or visitors
  • pulling insanely on the leash while walking
  • jumping up on visitors or other people
  • destroying objects
  • not properly potty trained
  • etc...

My rule is, if it bothers you, it's a problem. Chances are you are having a problem, as you're reading this article.

What is behaviour therapy?

A certified dog behaviour therapist comes to visit you in your home. The family members discuss the problem(s) with the therapist. The exact complaint has to be pinpointed and what exactly is the cause of it. During the conversation the therapist analyses the dog's behaviour and puts it in the right context.

After the conversation some immediate actions are suggested that will solve the problem immediately. Be adviced though that this is not always a permanent solution but often a temporary fix. In some cases a permanent solution can be given on the spot, but not always.

After the visit the therapist will create a report in which all important notes will be put. The exact complaint, cause, prognoses, immediate actions and also including a complete roadmap for eventually solving the problem.

Aftercare.

The roadmap is crucial to fixing your problem. It's neatly written, step by step, but that does not mean it will be easy. On request the therapist can aid you in all of the steps. He will come back every few weeks to discuss how things are going. He will help you where the steps are not clear to you or when training the dog is difficult. The roadmap can be slightly adjusted if necessary.

With this aftercare plan the chance of success increases tremendously compared to trying it on your own.
